As the tourism in Split city has been booming in recent years, more foreign property brands are expressing their interest to invest in accommodation facilities. Mariott International hotel group, the largest in the world, has chosen Split to open its first hotel in Croatia. Their 4-star Courtyard hotel will open in the Spring of 2019 in the upper floors of Westgate 2 tower (now named The gate of Split).
The contract was signed by Westgate Tower CEO Josip Komar and Mariott's senior franchise director Matt Hughes. The meeting was attended by the vice-president of the Government, Minister of the tourism and the Major.
Even though Mariott commonly chooses capital cities when coming to a new country, they have made an exception for the first time. Location of the tower, its contemporary architecture and Split's tourist potential played the significant role in fitting into Mariott's business policies.
Mariott has over 6 and a half thousand facilities in 127 countries, 30 brands and every 15th hotel room in the world. Some of its famous brands include Courtyard, Sheraton, Ritz Carlton and Westin.
